Tickets at door $15/$10

Speak Percussion presents a unique program of works, from concerthall pieces to music inspired by underground genres. An all-Australian program of our finest composers for percussion, nightclubs/concerthalls reveals some of the hidden connections between electronic and acoustic music, pop and art music through a rich musical landscape of layered rhythms and shifting timbres.

ARTISTS

Speak Percussion has for over a decade presented refined new music and hybrid-arts projects nationally and internationally. In 2011, Speak Percussion was the headline act for MONA FOMA (Hobart) and the Totally Huge New Music Festival (Perth). Speak received 3 standing ovations in its two MONA FOMA performances, and its premiere performance of Anthony Pateras’s Flesh and Ghost was chosen by ABC Classic FM as the best performance of all ABC recorded performances for 2010-11, to represent Australia at the International Rostrum of Composers in Vienna.

PROGRAM

Thomas Meadowcroft – The Great Knot for percussion trio and tape

Eugene Ughetti – Syncretism A for three drumkits

Anthony Pateras – Hypnagogics for miniature percussion and tape

Terminal Sound System/Speak Percussion – City Jungle for two percussionists and tape

Thomas Meadowcroft is one of Australia’s most innovative composers writing for percussion. Based in Berlin since 1998, Meadowcroft has startled Europe with his distinctive sound and unorthodox performance techniques. His new trio The Great Knot, was specially written for Speak Percussion. Inspired by the lo-fi sounds of a Casio keyboard, The Great Knot layers delicate rhythmic textures that evoke a forgotten sound world.

Eugene Ughetti is the Artistic Director of Speak Percussion. His new trio for three drumkits was written for especially for users of cochlear implants, as part of a research project initiated by the Bionic Ear Institute. Syncretism A leads the audience towards ways of listening and ways of imagining by presenting time-bending familiar grooves blurred with wayward sounds.

Anthony Pateras is Australia’s most talented young avant-garde composer, who has gained international acclaim for his visceral and genre-defying musical language. Hypnagogics explores a miniature world of tiny inflections that is inspired by the permeable border between wakefulness and sleep.

City Jungle is a collaborative project between Speak Percussion and Melbourne’s leading experimental electronica producer, Skye Kleine aka Terminal Sound System. The music pitches intricate drum programming against live percussion in a cutting-edge take on nightclub ‘breakbeat’ genres.
