Undue Noise, the Central Victorian sound and video art collective is excited to open its 2011 undue noise season with an exciting international act, providing a rare opportunity for free jazz to be experienced in Bendigo. The Scandinavian trio known as The Thing—Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and two Norwegians, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, is a high energy free jazz group influenced by different traditions of free music derived from Germany, England and America, but producing their own unique sound.

Mats Gustafsson is one of Europe’s biggest names on the free music scene. An intensely powerful saxophonist, he has somewhat reinvented the way of playing the instrument. In recent years he has achieved a higher profile through his work with Thurston Moore and Sonic Youth, saxophonist Ken Vandermark, and Japanese noise artist Merzbow. Despite playing in a wide variety of contexts, Gustafsson has increasingly moved in the direction of high energy playing. Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love have become known as Norway`s heaviest rhythm-section. Since 1992, they have collaborated in several groups, including School Days with Ken Vandermark, Scorch Trio with Raoul Björkenheim, and the Swedish/Norwegian jazz-group Atomic.
